I picked up "What the River Knows" by Isabel Ibanez at my local library during the middle of Hispanic Heritage month. I didn't realize it was Hispanic Heritage month or that the librarians had set out books relating to that, but I made the connection when I realized there was some Spanish in the first chapter. The Spanish was minimum, just a little tiny bit here or there, so don't let that stop you from reading if you are not a Spanish speaker.
The characters were hard to figure out at times. I wasn't sure who the bad guys were until... Actually, I'm still not sure. There was a plot twist that left me confused at the end, I can't wait for the next book because it left me hanging.
The romance was another confusing aspect too, but it was done well. It's a kind of will they or won't they situation. I'm not a fan of the whole he's been engaged to a girl he doesn't know back home the entire time. Like, I get that he doesn't know her and that it isn't his choice, but especially during the time the book is set in I'd expect him to not pursue anyone else. Still, I am guilty of finding their relationship cute and romantic.
Overall, it's a fun read, even if it's not what you'd normally pick up and read.
